READER POLL: Ipswich Town boss reluctant to sign new faces but wants to keep Darren Ambrose

Mick McCarthy won’t make a raft of signings in the January transfer window, but has expressed his desire to keep short-term signing Darren Ambrose.

McCarthy has used just 25 players this season, including transfer-listed loan duo Frank Nouble and Anthony Wordsworth, but admitted he would find it difficult to further enhance his squad.

Crystal Palace midfielder Jonny Williams, whose second loan at the club was cut short by injury, could be an option, although teenager Teddy Bishop is now seemingly established as Town’s key flair player.

Ahead of tonight’s home clash with Charlton, McCarthy, who said it was unlikely the club would buy anyone next month, explained: “I’m not that bothered. “Where am I going to get anyone better?

“If we could find someone who could strengthen the squad and enhance our chances of being in the top-two in May, all the players would take that. But it’s getting that fine balancing act. I’ll be doing very well if I can better what I have got, that’s for sure.

“We have until March to take a loan deal to supplement something but I don’t know if they make such a big difference.

“We are looking, but there won’t be any plates spinning that are going to fall on my head immediately.”

Ambrose, whose deal runs out next month, has done enough to impress McCarthy who yesterday released defender Sean St Ledger.

“My intention would be to try and keep him and I think his intention is to definitely stay here,” he said.

“A couple of lads have said he has got better and stepped up a bit recently. He’s certainly complemented training and contributed in games.”

  • I think the manager deserves a lot of the credit that from the moment he took over he made a difference. Although it would be nice to see a few attacking wingers take a player on and cross the ball, does that happen any more. Whatever happens from here on in, we can be proud of having a great side with arguably the best attacker murphy and best defender in the league Berra. Can someone please respond I am very puzzled why no one seems to have noticed that mcgoldrick has not signed a new contract, having turned down 7m for him he could go for nothing soon. Also what about Bru getting a contract extension doesn't his deal go to the end of year. He is looking better every game I see him in.

  • Dear Cyril,i had decided some time ago to ignore the things that you post on here, but now i'm beginning to feel some sympathy towards you.In a bid to endear yourself to the regulars on here i should make it a new years resolution to spell check your comments (it's just lazy),try reading back what you have written before posting it (this saves the embarrassment of contradicting yourself,i.e.this thread) and don't just choose which comments to reply to,when somebody is taking your joke comments to task.Regarding this story,it is obvious that Hewitt needs much more experience and knowledge at this level, but it looks like he may make it,if looked after properly. Some Colchester fans and friends tell me that he looks very promising.Chambers is not a great footballer, but then many good captains are not. What he is though is a good leader, full of passion and energy, the right level of aggression and commitment and an important connection with the crowd. You would'nt know this Cyril, but they wait in their thousands at the end of a game (me too) to celebrate every victory together, this word together is very important in the Town's success, another thing that you know nothing about.Despite all of this i wish you a happy new year (god knows need some)

  • Message for Cyril (a k a as Larry the Lamb) Your flock are well behind now. Ewe will go even further down in the weeks ahead as other teams fleece your lads. Not even a ram raid will help but no doubt you will try to pull the wool over all the true ITFC supporters eyes.

  • Sorry Cyril but in your haste to try and score a cheap point over me you have contradicted yourself totally.... You make your mind up on players and all things to do with ITFC based on the comments and opinions of Mick Mills and Alex Mathie...... I on the other hand make my up my own mind independently based on performances I witness myself and yet you somehow label me the sheep ?!?!? People in glass houses mate !!! Now I love Mick Mills, one of towns all time greats but he was a pretty awful manager who managed to relegate two clubs !!! Just as a little reminder how bad Mills was he spent £1m in 1989 (half of which went on Ian Cranson I ask you !!!) and got Stoke relegated. In 1989 that was a lot of money and far more than MM has had to spend 25 years later in 2014....My point being that when it comes to judging players perhaps you should just trust MM who would appear to be a lot better at it than you, me, Mills or Mathie - towns current league position and his managerial credentials appear to back that up !!!

  • Rod, an answer to your question, yes I do believe Hewitt is a better full back than Chambers, who IN MY OPINION is a square peg in a round hole, just becauseMM would not drop his captain, and wish to break the excellent attitude of the team at the moment, to the rest of you, you are like a load of sheep one comments and you all follow.

  • Good! We don't want to ruin the team now, and MM has the sense not to do that anyway. It's not a surprise people always want new signings but who would we drop? Chambers' at right back maybe for someone more expansive? I would rather keep Bishop there than have JW back. Probably strengthen the back up positions but who wants to come to the club as a back up? We could be 4 points clear of the play offs tonight so why would we risk ruining the team morale?

  • Yet more boring and rather predictable negativity from the resident Victor Meldrew (a.k.a Cyril). The ONLY town "fan" who is able to spin every single bit of news, however trivial, about ITFC into an opportunity to find fault be it with MM, ME, the style of play or host of other made up "reasons". Boring, predictable, utterly pointless, unwelcome dross from somebody with obviously far too much time on his hands and far too much hate than could possibly be good for any human being.

  • Cyril,do you think Hewitt is better than the full backs In the team at present. If so just who would you leave out.He is at Colchester keeping fit and getting matches under his belt,as MM said it's better than sitting on the bench and not playing. If he is match fit he is then ready to be called on at short notice.Does that not make sense.!

Just ask Burley what new signings do to a well settled and winning team!!
