The 75th anniversary of the launch of a town’s former library has been marked.

Octavius Seaman from Seamans building firm had the library, which is now known as Redwoods in Stowmarket, built to mark the 21st birthday of his daughter Phyllis in 1939.

Jane Wardropper is a trustee of the Red Gables community centre where Redwoods is based. She said: “We wanted to celebrate the fact that the library is still going strong at Red Gables, which is a charity run by the Mid Suffolk Voluntary Organisations Forum.

“In 2012, Redwoods was extensively refurbished; it is now an accessible facility, a meeting space with a new kitchen.

“Local organisations can rent out our facilities, like the Stowmarket Family History Society and Stowmarket Operatic and Dramatic Society. It was really a celebration of this small community and to make everyone aware of what we are
doing.”

Among those attending the event, which was sponsored by Seamans, were the mayor, Gerard Brewster and past and present centre trustee members.
