Harry Fricker of Kesgrave High School, whose handicap is scratch, won the Suffolk Schools’ Championship title at Hintlesham with a three under par round of 69, writes Tony Garnett.

He beat Tom Auchterlonie (Culford Academy) by a single shot with Max Adams (Culford) third with 71. Last year’s winner, Habebul Islam, was fourth with 72.

The field of 55, with 10 girls, included five off a handicap of one or better and 25 off single figures. Nineteen schools were represented.

There was an outstanding performance from 12-year-old Dominic Rudd (Thomas Mills) of Thorpeness who had a round of 78. He plays off nine and should increase his experience with a full programme of Suffolk county junior events in 2018.

He was only one shot behind Josh Goulton (Debenham) who was the Suffolk Under 16 schools’ champion.

Georgia Parker (Culford) was the most successful girl. Her round of 83 girls’ beat seven-handicap Fiona Stokes (West Suffolk), the reigning Suffolk girls’ champion who plays off seven, by three shots. Parker also won the under-16 schools’ prize. Culford’s Anna Ingles also had a round of 86. She plays off six.

George Fricker won England Schools’ caps against Wales and Scotland this year. His form dipped at Hintlesham with a round of 81. There were several others, who have represented Suffolk at junior level at varying age groups, who would have hoped for better scores.

Josh Hulyer (Samuel Ward) retired. He is now a member of Gog Magog Golf Club having switched from Haverhill.

Suffolk Open champion Alfie Halil has left school so was no longer eligible to take part.
