Retailers across the country are to shut their stores next Monday due to the Queen’s funeral.
Companies including Asda, Tesco and John Lewis have confirmed they will shut all stores on Monday, September 19, which has been confirmed as a bank holiday as the Queen’s state funeral takes place.
Primark stores, depots and head office will be closed on September 19 to give colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects and watch the funeral. It will reopen as normal on September 20.
John Lewis department stores and Waitrose supermarkets will shut all day for the funeral as "a mark of respect".
There may be “a limited number of Waitrose stores” near the funeral procession that will remain open but will be closed during the funeral itself.
Sainsbury's will also be closing with a spokesperson saying: "All Sainsbury’s supermarkets and Argos stores will be closed on September 19. This includes Groceries Online and Argos Fast Track delivery."
Sainsbury's convenience stores and petrol filling stations will be open from 5pm to 10pm.
Aldi will also be closing all stores "as a mark of respect" to allow our store colleagues to pay tribute to Her Majesty The Queen.”
Co-Op will also close all of its food stores, Post Offices, forecourts, funeral services and travel agents on Monday.
Asda stores will be closed until 5pm to allow employees to watch the funeral. There will also be no online deliveries.
Morrisons stores will close for the day and their petrol stations will open at 5pm.
B&Q will be closing all of its stores on the day of the funeral as a mark of respect and to "offer our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects".
Click and collect services will also be suspended at the DIY store.
Bed retailer Dreams will also close all of its branches on the day and suspend deliveries.
All of Poundland's UK stores will close for the day and staff scheduled to work will receive their pay in full.
Homebase has also said that its stores will close so that staff "can choose to mark (the Queen's) incredible life of service".
Toolstation too has decided to close all of its branches for the funeral and will reopen as normal on Tuesday.
All Royal Mail postal services will be suspended.
Retailers are not required to shut their doors on the day of the funeral, and others may choose to open for reduced hours, as many regularly do on other bank holidays.
The government guidance states: “Some businesses may wish to consider closing or postponing events, especially on the day of the state funeral, however, this is at the discretion of individual businesses.”
