It’s game-by-game mentality for Stowmarket as they travel to Haverhill Rovers

Tom Parke says instilling a game-by-game mentality will be the key to Stowmarket Town’s continued promotion push this season, writes Alex Moss.

The Old Gold and Blacks make the short trip to Haverhill Rovers tomorrow (3pm), with a one-point lead over Histon at the top of the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division table.

Stow’s nearest title rivals are set to visit Greens Meadow a week today, but first-team coach Parke insists his side’s focus this weekend will be solely on the trip to the New Croft.

“I think as long as we mentally approach each game the right way, we’ll be all right,” he said.

“Without being disrespectful, the goals we’ve conceded this year, not many teams have worked for them.

“We’ve given people goals, that’s got to stop, which it has. It’s onwards and upwards and we need to have a game-by-game mentality.

“We can’t look too far ahead and we can’t look in the past. We have to look at what’s in front of us and deal with it and move on to the next one. If we do that then I’m sure we’ll be up there and around it.”

Stow put the dramatic 3-2 defeat at Godmanchester Rovers behind them at the first opportunity last weekend, thrashing Long Melford 5-0 at Greens Meadow.

Josh Mayhew and Ollie Canfer continued their impressive goalscoring runs, with Mayhew netting the opener on seven minutes, before Canfer grabbed a brace in the last 20 minutes.

An own goal in the first half and a late header from Luke Read completed the scoring for the Old Gold and Blacks, and Parke is pleased with how the goals are being shared around by the Premier Division’s top scorers.

“Competition is healthy and one of the things we addressed at the end of last season was people chipping in with goals,” he said.

“We don’t want to be a one-man band and we saw that on Saturday. More players are chipping in and we’re not one dimensional.”

Defender Phil Weavers returns to the squad tomorrow, but Remi Garrett and Scott Chaplin are both unavailable.
