People in Suffolk have chosen their favourite canines – with the ten top dogs set to take part in a special parade to mark the tenth anniversary of one of the county’s most popular events.

More than 3,000 voters took part in a Dogs of the Decade poll to nominate the breeds which capture their hearts as part of the preparations for Suffolk Dog Day, which takes place at Helmingham Hall on July 30.

Owners of the breeds are being invited to go along and lead their pets in red carpet walkies to show off some of the best.

Organisers announced the winners of the vote today – 1 Greyhound; 2 Labrador; 3 Cockapoo; 4 Tibetan Terrier; 5 Cocker Spaniel; 6 Beagle; 7 Jack Russell Terrier; 8 King Charles Spaniel; 9 Border Collie; 10 Labradoodle.

Suffolk Community Foundation’s Tim Holder, who led the campaign, said: “As anyone who has already enjoyed Suffolk Dog Day will already know, each year families can be seen gathering with fellow owners and discussing their favourite breeds of dog.

“We thought it would be amazing to create a series of special parades to see Suffolk’s favourite breeds all together in one place throughout the day, but we wanted Suffolk to decide which ones.

“We just couldn’t believe how many people have taken part. We had a few hundred entries last year when we selected Pembroke as the new furry face for Suffolk Dog Day, but none of us were expecting several thousand this year.

“It’s been so much fun with East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star readers and BBC Radio Suffolk listeners leading the charge and getting very passionate about which breeds they think should be up there in the top ten.”

Gladwell’s Pet Supplies also supported the online poll.

In its first decade, Suffolk Dog Day has seen 150 volunteers already raising more than £435,000 for Suffolk charities and community groups.

This year’s event will include fun dog classes for everyone to enter with great prizes, two main rings plus an agility ring, activities for owners and their dogs, children’s activities, more than 50 stalls selling everything from dog accessories to cheese, a catering village and a variety of entertainment and demonstrations.
