Motorists faced delays near the Orwell Bridge this morning after a two-vehicle crash. Police are no longer urging witnesses to the collision to come forward after one of the vehicles was initially thought to have failed to stop.

The A14 was partially closed westbound between junctions 57 (Nacton) and 56 (Wherstead) after a Suzuki Swift and a Volkswagen Touareg were involved in a collision just before the bridge, near the Shell garage, at 7.55am, a Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said.

The driver of the Suzuki, a woman aged in her 20s, was treated by paramedics after sustaining minor injuries in the crash. She was taken to Ipswich Hospital for further treatment, an East of England Ambulance Service Trust spokesman said.

The collision caused heavy disruption during the morning rush hour. Delays reportedly stretched back to beyond Bucklesham, while traffic was also affected eastbound.

Recovery services arrived at around 8.45am and escorted the Suzuki through traffic over the bridge.

The A14 closure was removed at around 9.10am.

Initially, police appealed for any witnesses to the collision to call them after reports that a vehicle, believed to be a 4x4, did not stop at the scene. But a force spokesman confirmed later that the appeal had been removed.

No arrests were made.
