Temperatures could soar up to 28C (82.4F) this Bank Holiday weekend, but forecasters have warned of a risk of thunderstorms.

The region is basking in unbroken sunshine today in what is one of the hottest days of the year in Suffolk and Essex.

The mercury rose to 23C (73.4F) at Wattisham and 25C (77F) at Santon Downham, near Thetford today. But a high of 25.2C (77.36F) was recorded at Wattisham on May 16, which is likely to remain the hottest day of the year so far in Suffolk.

Chris Bell, forecaster at Weatherquest, said the weather will be “very similar” tomorrow, but will be a “little breezier” and cooler across the coast due to a south-easterly wind.

He said: “On Saturday, there will be sunny spells – hot and humid. It will be dry, but there is a small risk of a thunderstorm later in the afternoon and into the evening.”

Temperatures on Saturday are expected to reach 26C (78.8F), and could even reach 28C (82.4F), he said. There is a 20% chance of a thunderstorm on Saturday.

He said: “It is a typically hotter spell than we have had so far this year. Obviously if you are heading out this weekend, drinking plenty of fluid and applying sunscreen is probably something you want to think about.

“On Sunday, the morning and most of the afternoon is going to be dry, with temperatures of 25C (77F) or 26C (78.8F). There is a risk of what I would call thundery rain coming up from the south during the late afternoon and evening time. There is probably more of a chance of that happening than the thunderstorm on Saturday (a 50% chance).”

Temperatures are forecast to continue to cool on Monday but still reach highs of 22C (71.6F) potentially.

Mr Bell said: “It will feel fresher. But there is a chance of rain or thunderstorms. From late in the day on Sunday until Monday, there is a lot of uncertainty as to how it will play out. There could be a mixture of sunny spells, a chance of rain or thunderstorms, and fresher air.”

Overnight temperatures are forecast to be at least 10C (50F) during the Bank Holiday weekend.

Mr Bell added: “It will be slightly uncomfortable sleeping. It won’t cool down a lot overnight. It will be sticky and humid.”
