Suffolk is well known for its amazing fish and chip shops, so it is no surprise that a number of them received national recognition this year. 

Here are five much-loved chippies that received national praise in 2023. 

1. The Golden Galleon, Aldeburgh 

The family-run business has been operating in the coastal town since 1997 and has been a hit with people from the start.

The fish and chip shop was named by BBC Good Food as one of the best in the UK.

The list outlined the 16 best places to buy fish and chips in the country. 

2. Codfella's, Ipswich

This popular Ipswich chippy was named among the best in Great Britain when it was included in Fry Magazine's top 50 fish and chip shops in the country

Mystery judges visited thousands of takeaways and restaurants across the country, before judging them on a range of criteria, including quality, cleanliness, value for money, staff knowledge and ease of ordering. 

The fish and chip shop is no stranger to national recognition after receiving numerous awards in the past. 

3. Hendo's, Bury St Edmunds

The fish and chip shop in Bury St Edmunds was named in the final three for the Best Newcomer at the Fish and Chip Shop Awards 2023

The final three in all categories is selected following extensive judging from an anonymous panel of industry experts. 

4. Sole Bay Fish Company, Southwold 

The east Suffolk fish and chip shop, which was badly damaged during a huge fire, was named among the UK's best coastal restaurants

The fire forced the eatery to close in May after more than 80 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze. 

After reopening in June, the fish and chip shop has been included in the Good Food Guide's best coastal cafés and restaurants by the beach. 

5. Aldeburgh Fish and Chip shop

The Aldeburgh Fish and Chip shop was also named by BBC Good Food as one of the best in the UK.

The chippy is not only popular with locals, but those visiting the seaside town as well.
