An artisan producer of jams and preserves in Essex was honoured with a Great Taste Golden Fork on Monday September 4.

Thursday Cottage, located in Tiptree, Colchester, was announced the winner for the Great Taste Golden Fork for Food and Drink from East Anglia for its National Trust Sour Cherry Curd.

In total, a record breaking 12,366 different products were entered for the awards, but the curd was celebrated as the best tasting product in our region for its “phenomenal and seriously sexy” taste.

Pele Heydon, from Thursday Cottage, said: “Everybody here at Thursday Cottage works so hard to produce only the very best products, so winning the Golden Fork for Food and Drink from East Anglia really does make all of the hard work worthwhile. The Sour Cherry Curd is a rather new and unusual product that people are sometimes hesitant to try as it is so different, but hopefully more people that visit National Trust properties will see that it has been recognised at the top level and give it a try.

“We like to think of ourselves as ‘The own-label specialists’ here at Thursday Cottage so winning the Golden Fork award for a product that we produce for The National Trust really does back this up. Go out to a National Trust property near you and give the Sour Cherry Curd a go. Also, go to the Thursday Cottage website and find a stockist near you of our own range which is of the same quality as this award winning product.”

According to the judges at the award dinner at the InterContinental London Park Lane Hotel, it boasted a “cherry drop sweet aroma” and “cherry bakewell-like flavour”, and is also included in the year’s Top 50 Foods.

As well as the Thursday Cottage, the Duckstrami by The Old Barn Smokery in Stock, Essex, and the Elderflower & Lime Ice Cream by Colchester-dairy Handmade by Hadley’s, were two of the 165 products awarded the Great Taste three-stars.

Great Taste, which is recognised as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers, was founded in 1994 by The Guild of Fine Food.

In the 23 years since it was established, over 122,000 products have been blind-tasted by a team of dedicated and experienced judges with a palate for exquisite tasting food and drink.

Tortie Farrand, marketing director at The Guild of Fine Food, said: “The Great Taste Awards are an important benchmark of great tasting food and drink. Buyers from both the food service sector and retail use Great Taste to source new products. A product wearing the black and gold label can expect an uplift in sales of at least 20%. Consumers know and trust the logo too, and they look out for products with a Great Taste stamp of approval.”

All products that have the black and gold Great Taste logo can be guaranteed to have been thoroughly judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates in the food industry, to assure buyers of the great-tasting quality.

During the judging process to find the 2017 stars, all unused products were donated to local food banks and hampers were sent to local businesses to raffle them for charity, as well as computer equipment used to record the judges’ comments being refurbished and used to facilitate after school clubs and other ways to support underprivileged families.
